web's 10 most hated people

Last month, Radar published its list of the Web's 10 most hated people, listing a variety of celebrities and newsmakers that the Internet masses despise. We loved the article so much that we decided to add some of our own entries, because there are so many people who really get under our collective skin. So, whether you agree or not, we present our list of people that have made the Web's blood boil, or at least just consistently annoyed a good portion of 'Net surfers.

1. Tila Tequila

Another Internet phenomenon, Tila Tequila rose to fame after some modeling and limited TV appearances made her the most popular "artist" on MySpace. She parlayed that success into a star turn on two seasons of the MTV dating show 'A Shot At Love with Tila Tequila.' She's inspired hate songs and even her own "fans" didn't support her music, as only 13,000 copies of her debut single were sold in its first week. Even Page Six got in on the hate, calling her a "skank" and claiming her bisexuality was a ratings ploy.

the imac turns 10 but are it days numbered.

iMac Turns 10, Predicted to Not Make 20
In early May of 1998, Apple launched a computer that was said to "deliver the things consumers care about most - the excitement of the Internet and the simplicity of the Mac." That computer was, of course, the iMac, a fruity-colored all-in-one machine that was advertised as being ridiculously easy to set up, use, and take online with (still a somewhat tricky process back in the late 90s). Now, 10 years on, Ars Technica takes a look back at the evolution of the iMac, and makes a few predictions about the machine's future.

Since then, the machine has shrunk considerably, ditching the giant old CRT monitor in favor of slim and bright LCD displays. Despite its size-shrink, it has also grown in performance in huge leaps and bounds. The first machine had a 233 megahertz CPU and just 32-megabytes of memory, while the latest model can be equipped with a 3.06 gigahertz CPU and two-gigabytes of memory. There's still no floppy disc on offer, though.

The iMac has continued to be quite popular, but Ars predicts its days are numbered. With two-thirds of all Macs being sold today going in laptop form, and that number doing nothing but increasing as people embrace mobile computing, the belief is that the iMac will go the way of the Macintosh Classic II, lost to the annals of history.

now get upto the top of the mountains with ur co

Admit it. You've tapped into a neighbor's Wi-Fi, siphoning off a little bandwidth for free so you can check some e-mail or maybe just surf the Net for a bit. Of course, you could get your access on the up and up by going to a local Internet cafe -- but what do you do when you're attempting a shot at the top of the world?

China has the answer.

17,000 feet above sea level, at the base camp to Mount Everest, China Mobile has built a business office and Internet cafe. The Mount Qomolangma base camp provides mobile and Internet services to "government officials, mountain climbing members and journalists," reports China Daily.

The highest hotspot in the world was established to support the Olympic torch's journey across the so-called "rooftop of the world." The China Mobile office offers Wi-Fi access with remote payment, SIM change service and other basic services, "in addition to free film, vending machines and new business experience." China Mobile claims "about 40 to 50 people go to the office and Internet cafe every day to experience the services."

in body wi-fi gadgets are warned by doctors by heart attacks.

We recently reported on some intriguing cell phone software that could track your weight or insulin levels and automatically contact doctors if there were any issues. Now researchers are taking that to the next level with implantable sensors that can wirelessly communicate with doctors automatically in case of an emergency.

The sensors use Bluetooth, the same tech that lets you use a hands-free kit in your car sans wires, and would be implanted in the body to monitor heart rate and other statistics, automatically warning doctors of irregularities. Additional sensors applied to medication dispensers could raise alarms if a prescription wasn't being adhered to. And, should you fall unconscious, a call to the local emergency services could be placed for you.

Soon, it seems, you won't even have to say "I've fallen and I can't get up!" to get some help!

next generation would be wireless love

Well, what do you know? Sometimes even the the most repetitive of rumors finally comes true. Barely 12 hours after the Wall Street Journal reported that a deal between Sprint, Clearwire and just about everyone else was dangerously close to going down, it seems as if the bottom lines have indeed been signed. Details are pretty light at the moment, but we definitively know that Sprint Nextel Corp. and Clearwire Corp. will be merging their "next-generation wireless broadband businesses to form a new wireless communications company."

Quite simply, the new outfit will be called Clearwire, even though Sprint will hold around 51-percent of the firm, while existing Clearwire shareholders will own 27-percent and the new investors will hold 22-percent. New investors? Ah yes, Intel, Google, Comcast, Time Warner Cable and Bright House Networks will collectively invest $3.2 billion in the new company, but that figure is "based on a target price of $20 a share of Clearwire's common stock, and is subject to a post-closing adjustment."

hd - dvd going with distance $2.7 million bowl spot

Rocky always refused to go down, even if his face got beaten into Hamburger Helper. Despite looking like Rocky sans the steadfastly loyal fan base, the folks behind HD-DVD are trying to get that cinematic comeback-when-the-chips-are-down win... or at least some sort of moral victory.

Wired reports that Toshiba, one of the companies that's backing HD-DVD, has paid $2.7 million for a 30-second commercial airtime spot during this Sunday's Super Bowl. This is very strange news indeed, considering most people -- including consumers in January -- have already decided that HD-DVD is dead.

Perhaps this is Toshiba's way of saying that it's going the distance, no matter the facts. Maybe the HD-DVD player manufacturers are determined to carve some sort of new niche as the cheaper, downmarket alternative to Blu-ray's pricey and flashy product. Time to cue the inspirational soundtrack...

Switched downloaded : PDF reader ****

Switched Dowload: Foxit PDF Reader

Foxit PDF Reader

What it does:

Foxit is a replacement for that unfortunate staple of every computer user's life: Adobe Reader. Foxit reads and even edits PDFs -- those files that look exactly like original documents -- without the slowdown and crashes associated with Adobe's product.

What we like about it:

Foxit is about as close to perfect as a piece software can get: it opens and operates faster than Adobe's Reader, uses much less RAM, and packs more features into a download about a tenth the size.

In addition to reading PDFs, Foxit can perform basic editing tasks and lets you add notes to documents -- features Adobe charges several hundred dollars for in its Acrobat platform. Foxit even has some features that Adobe's professional application lacks, such as tabs for opening several PDFs in one window, and support for multimedia so you can actually play back audio and video in multimedia e-books.

What we don't like:

Our only problem with Foxit is that the latest versions are Windows-only. Mac and Linux users need love too.

Bottom line:

The existence of the fast, stable, and user-friendly Foxit makes you wonder why anyone would continue to use Adobe's bloated, crash-prone program. Get Foxit now and clicking links to PDF files will no longer prompt panic and cursing.

US says india is maintaining positive economic growth

Food grain
WASHINGTON: The US has asked Indians not to look at its leaders' comments about the growing prosperity of their middle class contributing to the rise in global food prices in a negative fashion.

Commenting on angry public reaction to a statement by US Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice, State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said on Friday "I think the statement just gets to the basic fact that the world and the international system is changing."

"Certainly, nobody in the US is trying to single out a government or nobody in the United States is expressing the sentiment that it is not a good thing that there is greater calorie intake among more people around the world than ever before," he said. "That is a positive thing."

"And the fact that you have greater economic prosperity around the world, whether it's in India or China or elsewhere around the world, and as a result, there are different standards of living, a positive sense, that is good for the international system.

"That really speaks to some of the goals that were expressed at the inception of the current international financial, economic, and political system when you look back to the immediate post-war period in '46, '47, '48. It's a positive thing.

"So again, I'm not sure what prism people are viewing the remarks through, but I would encourage them to not look at them in a way that is intended to single out, in a negative fashion, the people of India or anybody else around the world," McCormack said.

don't blame the internet

">"> Identity Theft - Do not Blame the InternetIdentity flight - also known as identity theft, identity theft and fraud ID - describes a type of fraud where a criminal adopts the identity of anyone One of the other in order to benefit illegally. It is one of the fastest growing forms of fraud in many developed countries. In the UK, identity theft is growing at a rate of 500% each year and, according Which Magazine, 25% of the population have suffered from identity theft or know someone who has. In the United States, a report published by the Better Business Bureau found that 2004, more than 9 million Americans were victims of identity theft with the total amount defrauded is estimated at $ 52.6 billion. with figures like these, it's no wonder he there is some concern regarding computer and Internet safety. after all, the Internet is essentially a mechanism for exchanging information and the possibility that some information may be exchanged over the destiny ' is never far fr! om many users minds. It is easy to imagine criminal minds from around the world using the Internet to hack into computers in order to gain access to information with which to advance their plans devilishly sly. however, as 'revealed in the report, the facts are a bit more down to earth and the Internet, rather than make you more at risk of identity theft, can help reduce your losses if you do the victims of this form of fraud. According to the Better Business Bureau of research of the main methods by which criminals have access to the information used in identity theft and fraud are: Lost or stolen wallet, notebook cheques or credit cards. 28.8% Viewed in the context of a transaction. 12.9% * Accessed by a friend, an acquaintance or relative. 11.4% Do not know, refusal, no answer. 11.1% of information that is accessible by employees corrupt. 8.7% Stolen paper mail or fraudulent change of address. 8.0% achieved in another way. spyware Computer 7.4%. Information 5.2% stolen g! arbage. 2.6% Computer viruses and / or hackers. 2.2% mails sen! t by cri minals posing as legitimate. 1.7% * 12.9% due to operations - 10, 4% of online transactions, 2.5% of online transactions. Altogether, the case when the information was accessed during the transactions are divided into transactions online and offline, only 11.6% of the information used to carry out identity theft and fraud have been obtained from the computers. From this more than half was obtained by the use of spyware, viruses or hacking - including the risk may be greatly reduced by the installation of software protection and ensure that this is kept up to date. Not only does the survey show that the Internet is not an important source of personal information obtained illegally, but he also been found that the victims of fraud which has audited the financial records using the Internet, ATM machines or other electronic methods suffered financial losses that were, on average, 8 times lower than those of victims who used traditional paper statements to monitor their accounts.! This drastic reduction has been attributed to the rapid discovery of the fraud because of "real time" monitoring. Naturally, this does not mean that you should not do exercise caution when using the Internet or taking care to protect the personal information you may have stored on your PC. However, as long as you install suitable virus, firewall and protection against spyware, and to keep this updated continuously to the Internet may be more of a help than a hindrance when it comes to preventing identity fraud.By: Kavita BArticle Directory: http:// More www.articledashboard. philadelphia public wi-fi network headed for scrap heat

Once touted as a model of efficiency and good design, Philadelphia's citywide Wi-Fi network is set to shut down at any moment.

Beleaguered Earthlink, which has operated the network for the city, gave Philly a "final deadline" of today to offer a plan to take over the operation of the network from Earthlink or else it would pack up its gear and go home. Philadelphia's mayor said the city had no plans to spend any additional money on the network, which all but seals its fate in the junkyard. (Mayer Michael Nutter also said that contractually Earthlink cannot legally impose such deadlines, though at this point Earthlink looks like it's ready to accept whatever consequences come its way.) The network, as of today, was still operating in 80 percent of the city, but that could change at any time.

Earthlink has been working on extricating itself from the expensive and wholly unprofitable muni Wi-Fi business all year, canceling contracts left and right while it retrenches and, basically, tries to stay in business. Earthlink's similar network in New Orleans (where public Wi-Fi was of great public service during the post-Katrina weeks) is set to shut down on May 18.

With these two huge projects on the rocks, it's hard to declare public Wi-Fi as anything other than a disaster at this point. While dozens of muni wireless projects are still in operation, they generally cover smaller cities and/or limited areas inside those cities. To my knowledge, no one is making any money with muni wireless, and it's not even clear whether consumers are even using the networks.

3 ways to become a kid again-shaju

“True religion is real living; living with all one's soul, with all one's goodness and righteousness.” -Albert Einstein

I spent yesterday at Disneyland. One word of advice… avoid Disneyland during Spring Break. It felt as if you needed to wait in line to walk around, let alone to ride Space Mountain or Pirates of the Caribbean. There’s something wrong about enduring 65 minutes in line for a 1-minute roller coaster thrill.

Meanwhile, my little 2-year-old cousin had a different gameplan to navigate the chaos. He found a fountain spouting water from a hose in the kids’ play area. He worked up a routine: drink from the fountain, cover the fountain, lick his Mickey Mouse lollipop. And again: drink from the fountain, cover the fountain, lick his Mickey Mouse lollipop. And again... on and on and on for over an hour he sat there totally engaged as if he were riding a roller coaster.

I watched with envy while longing for the days of being a 2 year old with little or no responsibility and an uncanny ability to live fully in the moment. I just sat there remembering what it was like to be a little kid and have your parents take care of everything. Suffice it to say, when you were 2 years old, you didn’t even need to find a bathroom. When it was time to go, you just went right there in your pants.

If only for a moment everyday, we could again become a 2 year old. Not for the convenience of spontaneously releasing your bladder, but rather for the simple pleasures. As the Buddha said, “If we could see the miracle of a single flower clearly, our whole life would change.”

Here are some thoughts on how to restore the simplicity of childhood to your life:

1. Open Up to New Ideas, Energies, Foods, Songs

Pearl Buck said, “You can judge your age by the amount of pain you feel when you come in contact with a new idea.” It’s easy to get caught in routines: listening to the same songs on your ipod, going to the same few restaurants, not making time to experience the exhibit at the local museum. Exposure to a fresh flow of life inspires the soul, ignites the imagination, and enriches the palette. When you come to life with renewed curiosity, you return to the beginner’s mind enjoyed daily by a 2 year old… where everything is all brand new. Thoreau said, “That man is richest whose pleasures are cheapest.”

2. Create a 2-Year-Old Moment

If you watch a 2-year-old, they move from one activity to another with reckless abandon. But while in the midst of doing something, they are fully doing it. They’re not playing with a toy while checking their BlackBerry. A 2-year-old moment is allowing yourself to do one thing, and do it completely and wholeheartedly. Make it something simple like lie on the grass and look up at tall tree, or fool around on an Etch-a-Sketch. As described in my Disneyland scenario, the adults felt trapped by the crowds and lines, but the 2-year-old escaped into the infinite space of a simple pleasure.

3. Restore Your Sense of Stillness and Silence

To find stillness and silence in the mind and body is to wipe the slate clean, empty the cup, and clear the playing field. From a place of stillness and silence, it’s so much easier to come to new experiences with fresh perspective. It might mean a few deep breaths in the morning or kicking back on the couch for a midday 10-minute catnap. Silence is often the most accessible of the simple pleasures. “Words are a heavy thing... they weigh you down. If birds talked, they couldn't fly.”

now students can't refuse the ms-office 2007

Now here's something more software companies should do. Apparently, Microsoft is offering students with an .edu address a 91 percent discount on its Ultimate Microsoft Office suite, which normally retails for $680, in order to prevent software pirating. Students can take advantage of this deal from now until May 16,2008 at www.theultimatesteal.com.

The New York Times says only students currently enrolled in at least a half-credit course are eligible. Otherwise, you have to pay the full price for the Microsoft suite that includes Word, Excel, Outlook, Powerpoint, Publisher, OneNote, Access, InfoPath, and Groove. A trial version is available if you want to test drive it before plunking down $60 for the suite, but I can already tell you this is one offer that's hard to refuse.

It's an odd time for this promotion, being the end of the semester and all, but you know it won't be long before the back to school season is here so take advantage of the low price now.

Seriously, I wish more companies would offer more deals on software to students. Pirated software in schools is a huge problem, but what's a student to do when even the student version is not cheap enough? I think Apple and Adobe should seriously consider lowering their prices on software for students. I know plenty of students who resort to pirated software because they can't afford Final Cut Pro or Photoshop which they need in order to complete the course.

All I can say is kudos to Microsoft for doing this. I just hope they bring back this offer before the fall semester.

sharukh had come up with his co-actors very well and ruling the bollywood.

Shahrukh Khan and Preeti Zinta.

Shahrukh Khan

Shahrukh Khan
in his illustrious career had mainly acted in films opposite Kajol, including blockbusters like Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham, Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, Baazigar, etc. But whenever he had acted with Preeti Zinta, he had created a lasting impression.

Preeti Zinta
In Dil Se, Mani Ratnam, did an experiment with Shahrukh Khan by asking him to address terrorism in the North-eastern states of India. Manisha Koirala played the leading role acting as a terrorist who was ill-treated by the military officials of the north-east. While he met her during her journey and created a relationship with her, his parents arranged a girl for his marriage.

Shahrukh Khan
Preeti Zinta was the girl who had been chosen by the family members of Shahrukh Khan in the film. He met her and both had conversation to familiarise each other. At the end of the film Shahrukh Khan sacrificed his life to die in a suicide-bombing operation where she died with Manisha Koirala to prevent her from killing innocent people.

The most successful film involving Shahrukh Khan and Preeti Zinta was Veer Zara under YashRaj Banner. The film involved a lovestory between an Indian and a Pakistani. Shahrukh played the role of an Airforce Official who saved Preeti when she was drowning in water and brought her to his village where his parents Big B and Hema Malini treated her like their children.

Preeti Zinta
In the meantime Monoj Vajpai was supposed to marry Preeti and in revenge he compelled Shahrukh to accept the allegation of being involved in terrorist activites against Pakistan and he languished in jail. Rani Mukherjee later reopened the case, fought it against Anupam Kher, the opposite Counsel, and released Shahrukh. Preeti also devoted her life in a village school where Shahrukh’s parents wanted her to make contribution.

Preeti Zinta
At one time both Shahrukh and Preeti were successful pairs, whoare competitors now, sponsoring cricket teams like Kolkata Knight Riders and Kings Eleven Punjab, in ICL Matches. The viewers expect them to do well in their new role just like they had acted successfully in films together.

a death in pakistan

It would have been nice to ring in the new year on a positive note. Alas, our top story for the last week, with 226 votes and a whopping 757 comments, was “Former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto Assassinated at Rally.” In the thread, Islam got a pretty thorough shellacking. But one member, quackpot, argued that Muslims had no monopoly on terrorist violence: “Of the terrorists attacks in Europe last year, about half were Muslim-related. The other half were by various separatist groups.” A similar point was made by dissent, who suggested that Bhutto’s killing was less about Islam and “more likely to be about politics and power, something I find fascinatingly absent from most of the comments of the Muslim-bashers commenting here.” Thinker, however, was having none of this: “Not all Muslims on the planet today are terrorists but almost all terrorists are Muslims.” A spate of additional Bhutto-related stories also made our Top Twenty. For starters, there was “Benazir Bhutto’s Assassination: What Killer Video Footage Reveals,” with 107 votes and 39 comments. (The latter post offered neither a link to the video footage nor any evidence for its assertions, but at least one clip of the shooting can be found here.) There was also “Giuliani speaks out about Bhutto and Military Funding,” in which the presidential contender pointed to the assassination as one more proof that the United States needs to “go on the offensive.” MisterX took Giuliani’s comments with a grain of salt: “Well, it’s a good springboard for Rudy to flash the terrorism card again.” But the ex-mayor had his supporters as well, such as libsRfunny, who insisted that “Rudy is much truer to his word than, say, Hillary Clinton or pretty much any other Democrat candidate.” And finally, “Doctors were pressured to give Govt. view of Bhutto’s Death” bagged 122 votes and 60 comments. Nobody seemed too hopeful that investigators would get to the bottom of this one.

50 years of nasa celebrations

Sure now we get live HD from the ISS like it's nothing, but much of the last half century of space exploration has never been seen by most in anything other than grainy analog broadcasts. That'll change in June once When We Left Earth: The NASA Missions debuts on Discovery Channel, drawing from more than 150 hours of NASA footage, called a cross between 'The Right Stuff' and EHD fave 'Planet Earth.' The Orlando Sentinel mentions the new doc is part of a push to ensure funding to speed further space explorations, as long as they provide more great HD opportunities we're all for it. Look for the Blu-ray boxed set July 24 for $79.95.

gigabyte gaming keyboard briefly spotted

If you weren't enthused about the SteelSeries 7G for whatever reason, Gigabyte looks to have another alternative headed down the pike. At the company's Spring Break event and Plug-Fest 2008, folks from Tweaktown were able to spend a few hurried minutes with the GK-K8000 gaming keyboard. We're told that "design issues" were holding 'em up from being released right now, but we get the impression that it's certainly nearing completion. Initial thoughts were that typing felt great and the unit itself seemed mighty sturdy, but why take our word for it? Hop on down to the read link for a few more snaps.

coutney love disaster through blog

Courtney Love

Courtney Love's disaster of a blog makes William Faulkner's stream-of-consciousness technique look straightforward. The former frontwoman for the now-defunct rock band Hole fully embraces tangents and rambling in her posts, discussing important things like her bangs and a messy financial situation in one extra long sentence("i have faith that the integrity of the three men i must depend on to get the facts of this thrown out thrown uyp psyhco puzzle will communicate to each other- i must say Sparkarts Naveen is a dammed GENIUS and theres a reason to not have forums at onesx website- its just a bucmnh of trouble why not offer more music and cool merch"). Large, indecipherable blocks of text, misspellings ("absouloute") and a general incoherence lead us to crown Courtney Love's journal as the Blog Most Likely to Implode.

builts's back on your back, keeps your files peripheral to closer

Not one to just follow the crowd, BUILT has thrown an interesting twist on the oh-so-popular Neoprene laptop case. The Laptop Backpack enables users to tote their 12- to 17-inch machine right on their back along with textbooks, LAN party flyers and a copy of The Daily Bugle; you'll also find a couple of smaller compartments for storing peripherals and accessories. The material itself is water- and stain-resistant, and the pack is available in two sizes to fit all but the most atypical of frames. According to BUILT, the new wave of laptop carrying should begin today at $80 a pop.

verzion promises to play the 700 open acess mhz rules

Google's been making all kinds of a fuss lately over what it claims are Verizon's plans to subvert the intent of the 700MHz open-access rules, but it looks like the carrier isn't interested in fighting it out (for once). Verizon issued a statement today saying that it "understood the FCC's rules," and that "of course we'll abide by those rules." Of course, that doesn't really mean anything until Big Red actually builds out a network and we see how it implements open-access -- which will take years -- but once again, it seems like Google is really the one in control of the 700MHz spectrum, even though it didn't win. Crafty!

collect calls from prison to cellphones is now possible

The next time you get popped for a crime you didn't commit and end up in the Big House, you're going to be real glad NCIC Inmate Telephone Services rolled into existence. The greatest dream of felons everywhere has finally come to fruition: You can now make collect calls to cellphones while you're serving your time. And hey, this isn't just some minor advance -- no, this is "lightning in a bottle," arguably on par with the first moon landing, finding a cure for cancer, or hitting that crazy high note at the end of "Happiness Is a Warm Gun." With a 20 percent call-completion rate, you don't have to defer your dreams -- rob a bank today, you'll definitely be able to make pricey collect calls to loved ones from jail!

microsoft to appeal $1.35b eu antitrust fine

Microsoft's no stranger to appealing antitrust decisions before the European Commission's Court of the First Instance, and it looks like it's saddling up for another go 'round: the software giant has decided to appeal that $1.3B antitrust fine handed down in February. Saying that it was only filing as part of a "constructive effort to seek clarity from the court," Microsoft has asked that the decision be annulled. Yeah, that seems pretty clear. As always, our suggestions that this be resolved with a GTA IV / CoD4 round-robin deathmatch on Live have gone unheeded in favor of tedious paperwork and months of delay, but we're still holding out hope.

charge up batteries by pedaling away under your desk

Pedal Your Gadgets to Full BatteriesLooking for a really alternative way to power your gadgets? Here's a an innovative and totally renewable option out of China that lets your legs do the charging. Called "ENERGIZED by YOU," the roughly $140 gadget is a simple pedal-powered generator tied to a small, removable battery. Pedal away and you'll charge the battery up. Then, you can remove the gadget from the pedal base, plug in your gadgets, and let them pull some juice.

It also has a little LED flashlight built-in that (if we're reading the Google-translated page correctly) gives a whopping 72-hours of light per charge. Impressive -- if you don't mind carrying around a giant, brick-shaped flashlight.

cellphone affects brain waves, but not that much

Scientific American Online reports on two recent studies, which suggest that the electromagnetic waves that emanate from cell phones may have an effect on basic brain function.

The authors are quick to note the studies don't reveal necessarily damaging results from close and constant contact with a cell phone, but do say it can disrupt sleep in a way that's similar to the effect of a half a cup of coffee. (The experiments apparently included no effort to compare the disruption to sleep patterns caused by vodka and Red Bull, but we digress.)

In short, the experiments revealed that the bioelectric impulses coursing through your noggin are indeed susceptible to the influence of a cell phone, although the scientists involved seem to see this as more of an opportunity to study how low level electrical impulses can be utilized to influence brain wave patterns.

mother's day spending on decline

For the first time in the five years that anyone has been keeping track, Mother's Day spending is expected to drop. Consumers last year spent an average of $139.14, while the average this year is expected to be $138.63. That's a 51 cent difference for those of you following along at home.

Those in the know cite rising gas prices and economic difficulties on the drop in spending. They do say, however, that moms in some areas may see larger gifts. While flowers, clothing, and spa certificates are popular, more moms this year will see electronic or jewelry purchases instead.

You know, I've got all the jewelry I need. Give me an extra hour or two to sleep in, then some pancakes made by a couple of sticky-fingered little girls and I'm good. Somehow, I doubt I'll notice that missing 51cents.

What about you? Do you celebrate with extravagant gifts or do you look forward to a little R&R instead?

walk/run methods

While jogging is my favorite workout, I've never covered long distances -- five painful miles on the last leg of a triathlon is the farthest I've ever gone. Currently, I run 5Ks on the treadmill and enjoy a 2.1-mile route in the neighborhood, but I'd really love to up my mileage.

This past year, a couple of my 'beginner runner' friends pulled off half-marathons and marathons. They trained and successfully ran their long-distance races by applying the run/walk method. Famous distance runner and author Jeff Galloway invented the Galloway RUN/WALK Method, which has made longer distances possible for most runners.

In a marathon, Galloway recommends incorporating a run/walk ratio within the first mile of your race, keeping up the pattern through mile 18. After that, you're free to run like a purist all the way to the finish line. The rationale behind walk breaks is to prevent muscle fatigue and speed recovery. Switching back and forth between walking and running muscles increases your overall performance capacity since a wider variety of muscles are sharing the load. Makes sense.

AHD sleeping is important for kids

Sleep is important for kids. Disturbed sleep can lead to poor school performance and behavior problems. My son is just about to turn 11. He's at his best when he gets about 10 hours of sleep though, more often than not, he wakes up after nine hours. When he gets less than that he is grumpy, unfocused, and defiant for the rest of the day. What makes matters worse is that my son has ADHD, which disrupts his sleep. It's a vicious circle, really. The ADHD makes it harder for him to sleep and a lack of sleep exacerbates his ADHD symptoms.

It turns out that my son is not alone. A recent survey found that more than 73% of kids with ADHD have sleep problems including difficult falling asleep, resistance to sleeping, and still feeling tired after waking up. There are many ways to help your child get proper sleep.
  • First and foremost, speak to your doctor if your child has ADHD and his having trouble sleeping. If your child is on ADHD medication it may be worsening his/her ability to get to sleep. Your doctor may have advice for adjusting the medication or even simply modifying the time of day your child takes meds.

five ways to reuse the chopsticks

I have a sizable collection of nice chopsticks, however, I frequently forget to tell the person packing my Chinese or Japanese takeout to skip the splinter inducing disposable chopsticks that find a way into my bag. This could be averted if I remembered to speak up or if restaurants switched to reusable chopsticks and charged a fee for disposables. Alas, I am left searching for five ways to reuse these bad boys.
  1. Pets. Your rat or hamster would be pleased to have their very own pair of chopsticks to munch on -- especially if your dinner was particularly salty.
  2. Set sail. Treehugger has a great photo of a boat made out of 7,382 disposable chopsticks.
  3. Gardening. Chopsticks and a sharpie are all you need to make some new plant stakes. You could even get fancy and use the wrapper as part of the label.
  4. Jewelry. Make a necklace.
  5. Hair. If your hair is long enough, twist it into a bun and hold in place

how to make your own rain barrel from daily life

Rain barrels are just what they sound like, barrels to collect rain water. Collected rain water is especially useful to water your garden, especially in time of water shortages.

Bill Volk on DIY Life tells us how to make our own rain barrel. Volk lives north of Atlanta, an area currently under outdoor watering restrictions. While there are commercial rain barrels available now, but they are usually not cheap, and isn't it more fun to make your own? (If you have the skills that is!).

So, take a look at Bob's article and see how what it takes to make your own rain barrel. His requirements for the barrel were simple enough: food grade, plastic, have a removable top, be reasonably attractive and not cost a "bazillion dollars."

how to guide to illustrates of upgrading your laptop

Conjuring up your own desktop is pretty far down on the list of "world's most difficult tasks," but actually building your own laptop is another thing entirely. As we've seen with Ben Heck's creations, assembling a lappie rather than buying a pre-fabricated model is a serious undertaking, and while Computer Shopper's guide to constructing your own is more of an "upgrade an existing" walk-through, it's still chock full of interesting tidbits. Ever had the urge to snap up a barebones lap warmer and have your way with it? Head on down to the read link, and don't be afraid of getting your hands covered in thermal adhesive, okay?

microsoft xbox group enjoys second quarter profit

It's taken a few years, but lightning's struck twice for Microsoft's Entertainment and Devices division (the portion of the company responsible for Zune, Windows Mobile, and Xbox). The operating profit of $89 million that E&D drew is just a drop in MSFT's far, far larger fiscal bucket, but unless business turns sour, from here on out it looks like the group making all the fun stuff in Redmond is no longer in the business of losing cash hand over fist.

electric motion system electric bike in dollars

Believe it or not, Electric Motion Systems' E+ actually isn't the priciest electric bicycle we've ever seen, but at $3,495 sans chauffeur, it's a far cry from being a bargain. Aside from boasting a relatively traditional frame, the unit gets powered by an EMS 1000-watt hub-mounted, brushless permanent magnet motor, which should provide 20 to 40 miles of fun on a single charge. Proving its intelligence, the E+ also supports regenerative braking, which enables the battery to get charged each time the rider slams the stoppers. You'll also find a handlebar-mounted LCD display which shows speed, distance traversed, battery level and whether or not cruise control is enabled. Yeah. Cruise control, son. Suddenly, $3,495 seems quite reasonable, no?

windows vista updates disables anti-virus programs

Vista Update Stops Some Programs from Working Properly
Microsoft is preparing to release the first major update to Vista, Service Pack 1 (SP1), which is supposed to clear out some of the major issues users have had with Vista, including speed and compatibility problems. Unfortunately for those eagerly awating SP1, it seems that Microsoft is creating just as many problems as it's solving.

Microsoft released an admittedly incomplete list of applications that will either not work properly or not work at all with SP1:
  • BitDefender AV
  • Fujitsu Shock Sensor
  • Jiangmin KV Antivirus 10
  • Jiangmin KV Antivirus 2008
  • Trend Micro Internet Security
  • Zone Alarm Security Suite
  • Iron Speed Designer
  • Xheo Licensing
  • Free Allegiance
  • NYT Reader
  • Rising Personal Firewall
  • Novell ZCM Agent
Ironically, most of the applications that will lose functionality or not work at all with Vista SP1 are security applications -- namely firewalls and anti-virus programs. One of the major complaints against Microsoft Windows is its relative insecurity when compared to Mac OS X and the Linux operating systems, so losing access to security programs will be a major drawback for most users.

friendly computer viruses that r good for your pc

Friendly Viruses Set to Race Malicious Ones

Everyone likes to race, whether it's cars or skateboards or just people on two feet. Researchers at Microsoft are looking to apply this notion of competition to the world of viruses, with the hope of creating friendly worms to compete against malicious ones.

Similar to the current research that use genetically-modified viruses to deliver medication or fight cancer, the "good" computer viruses that Microsoft is working on would take advantage of a given security loophole in computer systems. These viruses would spread themselves out like self-replicating worms by finding computers capable of being infected, then installing themselves onto those compuers and patching any flaws or security holes.

In theory, these angel viruses would make the computer safe from any virus that would attempt to exploit the same loophole -- assuming they get to the exposed computers faster than the real viruses do.

This is all theory for now, though, so in the mean time, keep that virus-scanner updated.

at & t says that internet will hit full capacity by 2010

Where, you ask, is the end of the Internet?

Well, in the time-space continuum that is virtual existence, the real question is when. And according to AT&T, without investment, the Internet's current network architecture will "reach the limits of its capacity by 2010."

The comments were made at a Westminster eForum on Web 2.0 this past week in London, where AT&T's vice president of legislative affairs Jim Cicconi warned that the systems currently in place will not be able to handle the increasing amounts of content (read: homemade movies of your cat break-dancing).

He said that at least $55 billion worth of investment was needed in new infrastructure in the next three years in the U.S. alone -- and that it would require $130 billion to improve the Internet worldwide.

Most outlandish quote:

"The surge in online content is at the center of the most dramatic changes affecting the Internet today," he said. "In three years' time, 20 typical households will generate more traffic than the entire Internet today."

would you like to marry in space.

Branson May Conduct First Galactic Wedding

If you were ponying up $100,000-per-seat for you and someone special to take a ride on Richard Branson's SpaceShipTwo into the outer atmosphere, chances are it'd be a moment that you'd have a hard time forgetting. That said, some couples are taking things a bit further to make that journey a memorable one. One as-yet-identified couple has plans to get married while out there, and it looks like Branson might just be the man for the job.

Virgin Galactic C.E.O. Branson, who is ordained, has already conducted a wedding while in mid-flight on a Virgin airplane (which was appropriately en-route to Las Vegas). The set of intergalactic nuptials to be exchanged on the upcoming SpaceShipTwo flight will be the first extra-atmospheric wedding. In addition to the nuptial couple, Virgin Galactic advister George Whitesides and his new wife, Loretta Hidalgo will be getting the first honeymoon in space.

So, if you thought your bride-to-be would be impressed with that trip to Acapulco, better think again!

darwin's complete work now available on free internet

darwin online

Thanks to the U.K.'s Cambridge University, Charles Darwin's complete works are now available for free online at the Web site Darwin-Online.org.uk. The venerable institution has digitized more than 50,000 pages of text and 40,000 images by Darwin, and made them all searchable. Only about 50% of the materials that will ultimately be available in 2009 -- the bicentennial of Darwins' birth -- are currently online.

Some of the materials on the site have never been published or transcribed before, such as Darwin's field notebook from his voyage to the Galapagos. The original notebook was stolen in the 1980s, and the version online has been transcribed from microfilm. Other works first published by the site include
the 'Journal Of Researches' (1839), 'The Descent Of Man' (1871), 'The Zoology Of The Voyage Of HMS Beagle' (1838-43) and the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th editions of the groundbreaking 'Origin Of Species.' In addition to Darwin's own writings, the online catalog will feature supplementary texts about Darwin, including contemporary views, references, obituaries and recollections of his life.

All of this is impressive and points toward the future of digital libraries and digitized resources. However, we hope that online resources of the future won't look like a public library homepage circa 1995. While we don't judge a book by its cover or anything, we think such a monumental undertaking deserves a bit more flash, and we mean that in every possible sense.

updated 'dilbert' site allows you to write your own punchlines

Write Your Own Dilbert Punchlines
Many out there repeatedly lie to themselves and say "I could do that" when reading a comic strip. One of the most popular strips to inspire this me-too-ism is Scott Adams tales of cubicle drudgery and middle management absurdity, Dilbert.

Mr. Adams and United Media have re-launched the Dilbert Web site, and one of the most striking features is the new mash-ups section that allows you to write your own punchline to today's Dilbert strip. Eventually, United Media plan to let visitors re-write the entire strip -- not just the punch line -- and extend this feature to all past Dilberts.

In addition to the new mash-up section, the Dilbert archives have been greatly expanded. Until now, the archives only stored the last 30 days worth of Dilbert cartoons, but now the archives reach all the way back to 2001 and will eventually reach all the way back to the comic's launch in 1989.

songs purchased on msn music wont work on new computers

Ever wonder why we loathe DRM around here as much as we do even when companies come along offering free, all you can eat deals? Well, if the Sony ATRAC debacle didn't serve as a warning there's always this: Microsoft just announced that it will no longer supply authorization keys for songs purchased from the defunct MSN Music service. That means that the PlaysForSure music you purchased will only play on your registered computers (up to 5) for as long as they shall live.

As Microsoft puts it, "If you attempt to transfer your songs to additional computers after August 31, 2008, those songs will not successfully play." It's worth noting that the move also locks the registered PC into whatever OS it's running -- any major update or switch to Ubuntu for example, would kill all your music, dead. Now imagine what would happen if iTunes shuttered its store -- Steve won't be around forever you know.

keyboard pants is just like anything greekier

Keyboard Pants, Is there Anything Geekier?
We're pretty sure you're supposed to wear things like your geekiness on your sleeve, not your crotch, but apparently no one told designer Erik De Nijs, the mind behind these pair of pants-cum-laptop-accessory.

The oddly saggy-in-the-middle-jeans, with bright orange stitching, have speakers built into the knees and a keyboard in the crotch for Googling from where ever you want. The convenience of always having a full-sized keyboard with you seems nice, but we're pretty sure we shouldn't be encouraging people to put their hands in their groin where other people might see.
